Job Summary:
As a Bindery Machine Operator, you will be responsible for operating various machines and equipment used in the finishing process of printed materials, such as booklets, brochures, and magazines. Your role involves setting up, adjusting, and maintaining bindery equipment to ensure the efficient production of high-quality printed materials according to job specifications and deadlines.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Set up and operate bindery equipment, such as folding machines, saddle stitchers, collators, and cutting machines, according to job specifications.
- Monitor machine operation to ensure proper functioning and make adjustments as needed to maintain quality and productivity.
- Load and unload materials onto machines, including paper, ink, and binding materials.
- Perform routine maintenance tasks on bindery equipment, such as cleaning, lubricating, and replacing worn parts.
- Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and perform minor repairs to minimize downtime.
- Inspect finished products for defects and inconsistencies, making adjustments to machine settings as necessary to meet quality standards.
- Follow safety protocols and procedures to prevent accidents and ensure a safe working environment.
- Maintain accurate production records, including job logs, time sheets, and inventory counts.
- Collaborate with other team members, including machine operators, technicians, and supervisors, to coordinate workflow and meet production goals.
- Assist with other bindery tasks, such as packaging, labeling, and shipping, as needed.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Proficiency in operating bindery equipment and machinery, with the ability to set up, adjust, and troubleshoot various machines.
- Mechanical aptitude and technical skills to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
- Attention to detail and quality orientation to inspect finished products for accuracy and consistency.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately and communicate effectively with team members and supervisors.
- Time management and organizational skills to prioritize tasks and meet production deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Problem-solving skills to identify issues with machine operation and implement solutions to minimize disruptions.
- Understanding of safety procedures and protocols for operating machinery and handling hazardous materials.
- Basic math skills for measuring and calculating dimensions and quantities of materials.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational training or certification in printing technology or bindery operations is advantageous.
- Previous experience operating bindery equipment in a printing or manufacturing environment preferred.
- Familiarity with different types of binding techniques and finishing processes, such as folding, stitching, and trimming.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to operate machinery and handle small parts.
- Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Tolerance for working in a noisy and sometimes dusty environment.
